Sutcliffe's Patent

In 1872 T.Sutcliffe, Wade and J.W.Dobson started the Oaks Glass Bottle Works in Barnsley 2 miles away from Ben Rylands Glassworks, the factory did not close untill 1927. Whether J.W.Dobson was in partnership before or after 1876 is unknown - as the advert below only mentions Sutcliffe & Wade. At the bottom of this page is a very rare Wade & Dobson patent, which ties the 2 gentleman together.

As can be seen from the above 1876 advert there are five types of Sutcliffe's Patents all made at the Oaks Glass Bottle Works, Barnsley and all have a double ended stopper increased in the middle to house an Indian rubber washer, it seals as the stopper is forced against a ledge formed in the neck (see fig.4 below).

Champagne - Shaped Cider. (1 & 2 above)
This is an early patent with a rolled lip, it has a white porcelain stopper as described previousy. The bottle is cylindrical in shape tapering upto the lip, the internal part of the rolled lip forms the seal for the stopper. This came in two sizes ordinary and split (10 and 6 oz).

Improved Indented Paris Claret - Shaped. (3 above)
This is an early patent with a rolled lip, it has a glass stopper as described previousy. The bottle is cylindrical in shape tapering upto the lip, the internal part of the rolled lip forms the seal for the stopper and has four flat indentaions in the neck.

The Excelsior Sutcliffe's Patent No.3751, 1875. (4 above)
This patent is formed with an internal annular projection halfway down the bottle to retain the glass stopper. (see fig.1 below)

The Ordinary Stand - Up Nectar with Patent Ledge. (5 & 7 above)
This patent with a square lip, it has a glass stopper as described previousy. The bottle is cylindrical in shape with a bell shape neck, this also had an internal legde to forms the seal for the stopper. This came in two sizes ordinary and split (10 and 6 oz).

The Patent Necked Rigded Bottom Nectar. (6 above)
This patent with a square lip, it has a glass stopper as described previousy. The bottle is cylindrical in shape with a bell shape neck, this also had an internal legde to forms the seal for the stopper. And is formed with an internal annular projection three quarters of the way down the bottle to retain the glass stopper.

In 1876 Thomas Sutcliffe, of Barnsley, glass bottle manufacturer and John Fewings, of Bridport, mineral water maufacturer were taken to court by Charles Tapp of Doncaster and Barrett & Elers of London for copying their previously patented stopper.
Barrett & Elers lost the case with their stick stopper but the Attorney - General agreed that it was very similar to Tapp's patent of 1872. Sutcliffe and Fewings agreed to withdraw the stopper - the patent of 1875 being only for the bottle shape.

Glass: Aqua two piece mould with added top and large elongated air bubbles ... size: 8½ inches high ... Date: Not known (1880/90?) ... Embossing: D.P.W.JONES ... JONES FOLKSTONE MINERAL WATERS .. REGISTERED TRADE MARK .. Also has heart containing the letter “J“. Around base of bottle embossed:- OAKS GLASS WORKS BARNSLEY PATENT ... Condition: Generally very shiny glass.
